When I got an e-mail this morning that Governor Rod Blagojevich of Illinois got arrested, I thought it was a pipe dream, but when I looked at the Chicago Tribune on my BlackBerry that confirmed the story, I knew this was a moment of truth.
First, it was a moment of truth for the people of Illinois knowing that there was evidence to prove Governor Blagojevich was allegedly destroying the well being of the people of Illinois. Looking at all the news accounts from the Tribune to NBC 5 and ABC 7 on the Internet that revealed one disturbing story to the other. This shows that the people of Illinois have had enough of its far reaching culture of political corruption.
Second, this will not just impact Governor Blagojevich but this will have far reaching impacts in the Democratic Party of Illinois. This will impact people like Emil Jones the former State Senate President, Tammy Duckworth the current Veterans Affairs Secretary, a handful of other state represenatives and Congress people, and it could reach the Obama Cabinet as the actual FBI probe shown that Blagojevich could have tainted the nomination of Tom Daschle as Health and Human Services Secetary.
But, this wil have a far reaching impact across America as this will energize the center right to take back their governments against corruption. I applaud the actions of both sides of the aisle to demand a special election because neither the Governor or Lt. Governor can be trusted to make this important decision. If a special election happens, expect both parties to put candidates up for this open senate seat, and if there is a candidate that is worthy on the center right, then it is more than important that this election and those in 2010 should serve as a series of referendums against Blagojevich and the Democrats.
Friends I know from Illinois are angry, sick, and upset over these actions that US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald says is “a new low for politics” in Illinois. Stay tuned, because this is not the last of this saga as more people could face charges.
